Training and Certification Requirements for Utah Medical Assistants

UT does not license its medical assistants. In other words, MAs in the state are legally not required to achieve any certification or credential. Neither do they are required by the state medical board to attend any specialized training program to become a MA.

However, note that most employers in the state shall seek a coveted certification for filling in job vacancies. Thus, the reality stands that obtaining a recognized MA certification is crucial to achieving success in the field in Utah. Moreover, unless one completes training from an accredited school, he/she is not even eligible to sit for any of these certification programs.

Even though MAs in UT do not need to opt for medical assisting specific courses in theory, the truth is that they more than often have to pursue programs for securing their future. Graduate programs accredited by the following are the safest way forward:

  • Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)
  • Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)

Employers ensure that the prospective employee is legally allowed to work in the United States has passed a high school diploma or equivalent at least and has no criminal history. Apart from these minimum legal concerns by the state, the employer also looks for at least one of the following (if not more) to decide on the most suitable hire:

  • Acquiring key skills from graduating a coveted MA training program in Utah
  • Associate of Science degree in medical assisting
  • A credential from a recognized MA certification body

Students can opt for the following MA certificates in Utah:

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)
  • Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA)
