Training and Certification Requirements for Massachusetts Medical Assistants

Medical is a field that requires a lot of attention and precision. Therefore, to become CMA, aspirants need to go through a meticulous training which may take 9 to 24 months to complete, depending on which program (certificate or degree) you choose.

You can opt for on-campus, online, or hybrid training considering your commitments and convenience. All three training programs have their pros and cons. So, you must compare all the aspects to make an informed decision.

Getting Certified

It is not mandatory to earn certification for working as a medical assistant in the state of Massachusetts. However, employers give preference to the candidates with certified medical assistant credentials. The CMA exam is conducted by the AAMA, which also provides a detailed content outline to students to help them to prepare well.

If you qualify for the CMA examination, the AAMA will send your wallet card identifying you as a Certified Medical Assistant and your certificate via email.

Requirements to be Eligible for the CMA Exam

The aspirant must be about to complete or have completed graduation from a program accredited by the ABHES or CAAHEP.

Note: Recent graduates can apply for the examination within a year of graduation, while the students who are about to graduate can’t take the exam 30 days prior to completing their graduation.

Recertification

The CMA certification remains valid for 5 years. In order to maintain your credentials, you must fulfill CE (Continuing Education) requirements or appear for the exam to get recertified.

Note: If you pursue continuing education, you are supposed to complete 60 points within the 5 years.
