Training and Certification Requirements for Oklahoma Medical Assistants

The state of Oklahoma does not have any specialized training or certification requirements for MAs. Thus, to work as medical assistants in the state, students are not mandatorily required to complete a formal medical assisting course. The only essential prerequisite is to have a high school diploma or GED, which makes you legally eligible to practice as an MA in OK. The scope of work permitted for a MA is also not clarified by the Oklahoma government.

However, it is good to note here that even though not legally sought by the state, it is highly advisable to pursue at least a post-secondary MA program. Please note that there are approximately 8,740 MAs in Oklahoma as per the BLS, and most of them possess accredited certifications. Diplomas, college community programs, and associate courses are available across institutes. As a student, you are provided opportunities to practice in real clinics and medical centers as part of externships.

Moreover, a national MA certification most definitely upholds your market standing and is a great idea to pursue if you want to excel in this field. The American Medical Association recognizes two vital certificates for MAs, CMA and RMA. Depending on the course you’ve completed, you may be eligible to take the CMA or RMA certification exams.

Training programs that are accredited by ABHES or CAAHEP make you eligible to sit for the CMA exam. On the other hand, RMA certification can be obtained even if one has relevant military education or work experience. Pertaining educational components need to be completed as pre-requisites for each certification. These certifications are sought after by most employers in the state and hence should be pursued if following this career path seriously.

All in all, these certifications are available for MAs in OK:

  • CMA by American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and RMA by American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • Nationally Registered Certified by National Association for Health
  • Medical Assistant (NCMA) by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) by National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
