Training and Certification Requirements for Wisconsin Medical Assistants

WI does not license medical assistants, which means that MAs in the state are not required to be certified or registered as per legal standards. However, employers more than often seek applicants with some sort of post-secondary training in place. It could be a diploma, certification course, or an associate’s degree. They look for employees that have a sound knowledge of a broad spectrum of clinical and administrative functions.

Employers seek someone with background experience, one who has gained these specialized skills and has practiced them in clinical settings. Moreover, for getting promotions and well-paying jobs, it’s almost imperative for MAs to achieve national certifications.

Of these certifications, the 2 most coveted credentials are the:

  • Certified Medical Assistant by the American Association of Medical Assistants
  • Registered Medical Assistant by the American Medical Technologists

Once you obtain these certifications, your employability gets boosted. Moreover, these are respected by employers all over the country, and not only in WI. Hence, you can also relocate without worrying if the need arises (some states may have add-on requirements).

Note: To be eligible to sit for the above certification exams, you would need to attend and successfully pass an accredited medical assistant program (by CAAHEP or ABHES). Sometimes, even prior work experience in the field can make you eligible for the CMA and RMA exams.

Once you pass these tests, you shall be awarded the respective certification.

Note: Apart from the above, Wisconsin law postulates that all people rendering care to others have to undergo mandatory background checks. This law is one that all MAs in the state have to abide by.
